Sounds awfully hard doesn't it? Who's perfect? How can God expect that of us? Oftentimes, we get down on ourselves because we focus on all the things that we should be doing, but aren't. Shouldn't we be focusing on the things we ARE doing? We try so hard to be perfect, but because we're human, we can't be. God doesn't expect us to be perfect, at least not all at once. That's what this life is for. It's a journey to perfection. What God DOES expect is that we try. If we are continually making steps to better ourselves and to serve those around us, then Heavenly Father will be satisfied. He will be proud of us and will bless us.
So how can we be perfect? Well, it's simple really. Follow the prophet. If we are doing everything in our power to do what the Lord (though His prophets) asks of us, then we're on our way to becoming perfect. "And they shall be made perfect notwithstanding their blindness, if they will hearken unto the messenger, the Lord's servant." (Isaiah 42:20 JST)
Again, the Lord doesn't expect perfection all at once. It's the little steps that count. It's setting a goal to get to the temple more often and achieving that goal. It's reading the scriptures more diligently and sharing them with others. It's deciding now to be a little better at paying fast offerings. It's remembering to tell your family that you love them. It's continually praying for guidance. You don't have to make a huge change today. You just have to make a little one. And then make another little change tomorrow, and another one the next day. And then, through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, eventually you'll be able to achieve perfection. And you'll be able to look your Heavenly Father in the face and tell Him that you did your best. And His response will be, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Thou hast been faithful over a few things. Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." (Matthew 25:21)
